Special cake for a Special Boy

My sweet cousin Molly made the mistake of commenting on facebook that she wished I lived closer so I could make Jack's 1st birthday cake (she lives about 2 hours away in the metroplex).  So my response..."Maybe I can!"  As the son of a pilot, Jack's party was ALL about planes, so with the help of my friend, Kayci Province, we put together this AWESOME cake (and Jack's little smash cake too ;).  We made the trip and the cake held up just fine!  Me on the other hand......well, I held up okay I suppose...but I think I was more nervous about driving this cake to their house than I was about getting our girls home from the hospital when they were born!!!
I survived - and luckily, Molly doesn't live too far from my favorite winery in Grapevine...so you know me, I HAD to go have a glass (or 2) to take the edge off after a 2 hour trip of feeling every single bump and pothole that hwy 287 and 380 had to offer!
The main cake was a 3 tiered white cake covered in fondant icing with fondant figures.  All parts of this cake were edible.
Jack's smash cake was buttercream icing with a fondant 1.
